Sligo's McMorrow & McGarry poised for All-Ireland spot

Michael McMorrow & Hugh McGarry in All-Ireland semi-final action

McMorrow & McGarry to reach final

Sligo pairing Michael McMorrow & Hugh McGarry go into Sunday’s All-Ireland handball 40 x 20 championships semi-final in upbeat mode following their encouraging victory in the Connacht final exactly one month ago, writes Michael McGee

Since then the County’s newly crowned Connacht champions have impressed with a number positive performances against imposing doubles pairings. In the Connacht final the Sligo men had to dig deep against Mayo’s Columba O’ Halloran & Peter Ferrick. The Mayo men were in command and took the opening game by 21-13 and were ahead 15-10 in the second. Somehow and from somewhere McMorrow & McGarry conjured up an unlikely comeback.

The duo rallied strongly and stormed back into the contest taking that second game by 21-15. In the tie breaker McMorrow & McGarry unleashed their great fighting qualities and took complete control winning it comfortably in the end by 21-8. They now focus on Sunday’s match with Leinster Champions in Louth’s Michael Tiernan & Charlie Kelly. The Louth men from the O’Raghalliagh’s Club in Drogheda will prove a serious threat to Sligo’s ambitions of reaching the final.

However with a number of confidence building wins in recent weeks McMorrow & McGarry will look forward to the challenge. Home venue and with the large fervent support expected in St.Mary’s the tie should swing in Sligo’s favour. The duo may need to repeat their Connacht final showing and are capable of moving up the gears if needed. McMorrow & McGarry’s look the more solid combination. Their greater team spirit and work rate should win the day thus ensuring their passage to this year’s final.

Heartbreak for Quinn

In the All-Ireland Juvenile 40 x 20 championships semi-finals in Moycullen on Saturday Sligo’s Aoife Quinn was narrowly defeated by Laois’s Niamh Dunne. Quinn was leading 19-16 in the first game but a number of errors allowed the Laois girl back into it and the Leinster champion gained the next 5 points to take the opening game. In the second Dunne took a big 18-7 lead. Quinn from the Castleconnor club played her best handball at this stage and fought back courageously and very nearly pulled it off. However Dunne gained control again and despite Quinn’s heroics it was Dunne that advanced to the final.

All-Ireland Juvenile 40 x 20 championships semi-finals result:
Girls U-17 S: Sligo Aoife Quinn Sligo lost to Niamh Dunne Laois 19-21, 16-21

Quinn aiming to reach All-Ireland Juvenile handball final

Castleconnor’s Aoife Quinn takes on Laois’s Niamh Dunne in the All-Ireland Juvenile handball 40 x 20 championships semi-finals tomorrow Saturday in Moycullen. The Sligo teenager came through Connacht unscathed but will face a tough task against the Leinster champion in Laois’s Niamh Dunne. Quinn who reached 2 All-Ireland finals in 2012 will be hoping to go one step further this year and will be aiming for an historic Juvenile handball title for Sligo.  Aoife coached by her father Oisin will be hopeful of continuing to push for major honours and with a little bit of luck could very well make the breakthrough.  The action gets underway at the Galway venue at 11.30 am tomorrow.

Paddy Walsh into All-Ireland finals

Paddy Walsh is through to another  All-Ireland handball final.   What an inspirational player.

Walsh into All-Ireland final

Paddy Walsh is through to another All-Ireland handball final following a straight sets victory over Dublin’s John Kiely on Sunday. The Sligo stalwart was never really troubled by the Dubliner in an overall resounding win for the St. Mary’s Club man. Amusingly Kiely is a former Sligo Rovers player. Walsh will play Down’s Des O’Neill or Cork’s Pat O’Brien in the final and aiming for an astounding 29th All-Ireland handball title having won his first back in 1974. Walsh could complete an historic double as Walsh & Padraig Maye are through to the All-Ireland doubles final following an injury to Dublin’s Mick O’Brien.  Another Sligo pairing Mick McMorrow & Hugh McGarry take on Leinster champions in Carlow’s Eamon Sunderland & Mick Doyle on Saturday 23rd April in St. Mary’s in the Emerald Masters doubles semi-final.

All-Ireland 40 X 20 championships semi-finals result:

Over 70’s: Paddy Walsh (Sligo) dft John Kiely (Dublin) 21-3, 21-10

In the Boys U-17 doubles Connacht final there was disappointment for Sligo when Stanley Harte Jnr & Ross Taheny both from the Collooney club fell to Mayo’s Conor Burke & Cormac Mahon by 3-21, 15-21 in the provincial decider played in Newport.

Paddy Walsh bids for All-Ireland final spot

Paddy Walsh (pictured above) takes on Dubliner John Kealy on Sunday and a place in this year's All-Ireland final

Walsh bids for another historic handball final appearance
Walsh makes the trip to the capital on Sunday with a place in the All-Ireland final at stake, writes Michael McGee.

Walsh from the St. Mary’s club already holds an astonishing 28 All-Ireland titles. He won his first title back in 1974. Walsh, Sligo’s most decorated handball player of all time goes into the match with a niggling shoulder injury that has hampered the Sligo player’s preparations. His opponent is Dublin’s John Kealy an unknown player at this level but Walsh will take nothing for granted as he gears up for the Dubliner. The experienced Walsh should progress to the final and a tilt at recording another historic title in the offing

Walsh will also appear in the All-Ireland doubles with partner Padraig Maye. They will be joined by another Sligo pairing in the Emerald Masters B doubles of Mick McMorrow & Hugh McGarry

The duo advance to the provincial final against Mayo’s Conor Burke & Cormac Moran. Castleconnor teenager Aoife Quinn is bidding to win her third provincial title in 2 years in the U17 girls final. Roscommon’s Caoimhe Shanager stands in the way of Quinn as she aims for a treble of Connacht titles
